What Does Pet Insurance NOT Cover?
Date: 03 Jan 17
Having pet insurance may provide you with the comfort and security that you’ll be able to meet the financial costs associated with your pet’s medical needs and emergencies. However, there are exceptions to the plan – before purchasing pet insurance, owners should be aware of the list of conditions and procedures that are not covered. Below is a list:
Genetic conditions
Any pre-existing conditions that your pet may have – this includes genetic diseases or health issues that your pet acquired before getting insurance.
Any injury or illness caused by the owner or owner’s pet.
If you injure your pet – this can be out of accident, cruelty, racing, or neglect – your insurance will not cover any treatment costs for it. The same case applies if one of your other pets is responsible for the injury or harm. For instance, if your dog and cat get into a fight, your insurance plan will not pay any of the veterinary bills related to it.
Organ transplants
Organ transplants are usually excluded from pet insurance.
Breeding and pregnancy
Any veterinary costs associated with breeding and pregnancy do not qualify.
Cosmetic procedures
Unless the vet deems it as medically necessity, any cosmetic surgeries including ear cropping and tail docking are not included.
Dental illness
Usually, anything related with dental or gum health are excluded.
As you can see, insuring your pet does not guarantee meeting all of your veterinary bills. However, there are other alternatives that pet owners can look into to reduce the costs. For instance, there are several membership programs that offer discounts 25% on medical services. Know that there are other ways to save money for your pet aside from having insurance.
